Police have detained three people including the wife of Sajjad, all of whom were hiding in a house in the city’s Oxygen area
Notorious criminal Sajjad Hossain managed to evade capture during a police raid in the Oxygen area of Chattogram city in the early hours today (5 December), during which two people sustained gunshot wounds in a shootout.
The two injured individuals, who got shot after Sajjad opened fire during his escape, were admitted to Chattogram Medical College Hospital. Two members of the police also received minor injuries during the operation.
Chattogram Metropolitan Police Deputy Commissioner (DC – Crime) Rois Uddin confirmed the developments, including Sajjad’s escape,
“We have been conducting operations to catch Sajjad for a while. Intensified efforts to apprehend him and his associates are ongoing,” he added.
According to police, Sajjad, wanted in 10 cases including one filed over double murder, was hiding in a house in the Oxygen area under Bayezid Bostami police station. Acting on a tip-off, police raided the location. After learning about the police’s presence, Sajjad fired multiple rounds and fled the scene.
Bullets fired by Sajjad struck Mohammad Javed, a resident of the area, and Kajol Kanti Dey, the security guard at a City Bank ATM booth, said police.
Following the shootout, a SWAT team arrived at the scene but Sajjad was nowhere to be found. However, police detained three people from the house, including Sajjad’s wife Tamanna Begum and two young men, said DC Rois.
Sajjad, known to be an associate of a fugitive militant figure with the same name, has become increasingly reckless in the criminal underworld. He faces charges of murder, extortion, and illegal possession of firearms in 10 separate cases, according to sources.
Sajjad, the son of Mohammad Jamal from Shikarpur, Hathazari, was previously arrested by Chandgaon police on 17 July with weapons but was released on bail the following month.
Sajjad has been accused of having involvement in several high-profile killings, including the 21 October murder of sand trader Aftab Uddin in Shamsherpara, Chandgaon. Aftab’s family later filed a case naming Sajjad as the prime accused.
Earlier, on 29 August, Sajjad was accused of public shooting dead two youths, Mohammad Anis and Masud Kaiser, in the Kuwaish area near Bayezid Bostami police station. These killings were reportedly the result of disputes over local dominance, business, and political ideology, sources said.
